A Superb Early 17th C Edo Period Four Fold Japanese Screen
From Streett Marburg
An ink colour and gold on paper painted Edo period Japanese screen. Painted with Samurai archers on horseback at a dog chasing event taking place to hone their skills. The arrows depicted are blunted to avoid injury. This is a most interesting and rarely depicted scene.
Inscriptions in black ink and paper to one side and reverse saying:
土佐光吉筆、犬追物之圖、四枚折、壱双 and 1620
'A pair of four-fold screens, a painting of Dog-chasing event, painted by Tosa Mitsuyoshi 1620'
Attributed Artist: Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1539-1613) 土佐光吉
This artist has works in the Met and V&A Museums.

Dimensions: 328cm w x 171cm h
Condition: Condition in keeping with age. Minor conservation and areas of repair. Some repaired tears to back. The screen is currently in two half and has been deliberately left like this for hanging purposes.
