Silverwork Embroidered Four Panel Screen

From Streett Marburg

Availability: SOLD

This extraordinary Japanese screen is hand embroidered with silver thread and depicts Guardian lions, also known as komainu, shishi, or foo dogs.  These are mythical, lion-like creatures seen across a breath of art forms. They are full of meaning - they symbolise prosperity, success, and guardianship.  The Meiji period lasted from 1868 until 1912.   There is an wonderful three dimensional appearance to this piece.  We like it wall mounted as a piece of art ,but it can also be used as a room screen.
